Rev. Dr. Monte Witherspoon Brown, Senior Pastor
Dr. Monte Witherspoon-Brown is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is the son of Reverend Vera Witherspoon and the late Douglas Brown. Reverend Witherspoon-Brown preached his initial sermon in 1994 at Steele Hill A.M.E. Zion Church in Lancaster, South Carolina under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Marion R. Wilson.
Dr. Witherspoon- Brown attended Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina. He graduated from Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies. While at Livingstone College, he served as the President of the Student Government Association, National-Vice President of the Pre-Alumni Council of the United Negro College Fund, President of the Pre-Theolog Union, and member of the Board of Visitors.
Dr. Witherspoon-Brown furthered his education at the Morehouse School of Religion at The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia where he received a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in Pastoral Care and Counseling. While at The ITC, he was elected president of the Student Christian League (Student Government Association) and served an unprecedented two consecutive terms in succession of many profound pastors and community leaders across the United States. As president of Student Christian League, he developed several community programs in the greater Atlanta area. While in Atlanta, Georgia Reverend Witherspoon-Brown received Congressional Recognition for Outstanding Community Service by Congressman John Lewis for his service in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.
Dr. Witherspoon-Brown served the following congregations as pastor, Shiloh A.M.E. Zion Church in Aberdeen, NC, St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Great Neck, NY and Caldwell Temple A.M.E. Zion Church in the Bronx, NY. In October 2016, he was appointed to Steele Creek A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte, NC.
Dr. Witherspoon-Brown is very active in the community. He is a former member of Community Board #3 which serves residents of the Morrisania neighborhood in Bronx, NY. He also served as chair of the Policy and Legislation Committee of the New York City Affiliate of the National Black Leaders Commission on AIDS.
Dr. Witherspoon-Brown earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University in Madison, NJ. He is a member of Boyer Lodge #1 of the Prince Hall Masons, and is a very proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.
